Six, Varied Exhibitions During Spring 2018 Semester

A busy and varied schedule of six exhibitions is planned in the Teaching Gallery and Marvin Library Learning Commons on the Hudson Valley Community College campus at 80 Vandenburgh Ave. in Troy during the spring 2018 semester. Admission is free to all exhibitions.
The following exhibitions are in The Teaching Gallery, located on the ground floor of the college's Administration Building:
Emerald Rose Whipple – Anima Mundi from Feb. 1 – March 3
Anima Mundi is a retrospective of oil-on-canvas portraits of youth culture and dream landscapes by New York City artist Emerald Rose Whipple. Whipple is best known for her paintings of wayward and pensive adolescents that document the coming-of-age transition between the innocence of childhood and the self-discovery of adulthood. Whipple's artist talk is 3 to 4 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 1 in the Bulmer Telecommunications Center Auditorium, followed by a reception in The Teaching Gallery from 4 to 6 p.m.

The annual, year-end exhibitions by students in the Department of Fine Arts, Theatre Arts and Digital Media are organized and installed by students in Gallery Management courses.
The Teaching Gallery is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays; 1 to 7 p.m. Wednesdays; noon to 4 p.m. Saturdays, and closed on Sundays, Mondays and Wednesday, Feb. 28.

Every Necessary Care and Attention: George Washington and Medicine from Jan. 8 – Feb. 16
This traveling exhibit from the U.S. National Library of Medicine explores the story of George Washington's personal health and examines the ways in which he sought to safeguard the health and wellness of his family, staff, slaves, and troops. The six-panel display illuminates the broader context of illnesses and the practice of medicine in Washington's time. This exhibition was developed and produced by the National Library of Medicine, National Institutes of Health with George Washington's Mount Vernon Estate, Museum and Gardens.
Juan Maldonado: Da Vinci's Disciple from Jan. 22 – March 2
An exhibit of works by Juan Maldonado, a native of Puerto Rico who studied in Europe and was greatly influenced by the works of Leonardo DaVinci. In New York City, Maldonado developed his specialty in portraiture and reportedly completed 400-plus commissions. He was artist-in-residence at the Bronx Museum and an advocate for Latino artists, helping create the Nuyorican movement in the 1960s. After a long and brilliant career, Maldonado died in Vega Alta, PR in December 2016. The serigraphs on display are courtesy of the Juan Maldonado Estate and the Martinez Gallery in Troy. Founder Laudelina Martinez talks about the artist at a reception on Monday, Feb. 12 at 6 p.m. (snow date – Thursday, Feb. 15).
Questar III High School Juried Art Show from April 9 – 27
Paintings, drawings, video and sculpture by high school students representing 23 school districts in Rensselaer, Columbia and Greene counties are included in this 29th annual exhibition.
The Marvin Library Learning Commons is open 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays; 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Fridays (and Wednesday, Feb. 28); 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays, and closed Sundays.
