Free Income Tax Assistance Available on Campus

Hudson Valley Community College is working with the United Way of the Greater Capital Region for the fourth straight year to host Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA), a national program where community members can get free assistance from IRS-certified volunteers to prepare their federal and state tax returns.

Again this year, some of the IRS trained and certified volunteers will be Hudson Valley students studying in the Accounting or Business Administration programs.

“The VITA program allows our students to gain valuable experience in the fields they are currently studying,” said Business and Criminal Justice Department Chair Ricky Thibodeau. “It’s a community service that we are happy to provide support for again this year.”

VITA assistance will be held in the Bulmer Telecommunications Center, room 216, from 1 – 4 p.m. on the following dates:

  • February 7, 14, 21, 28
  • March 7, 14, 28
  • April 4, 11

Registrants should sign in at the lobby on the first floor of the Bulmer Center.

VITA is open to all students, staff and community members who qualify. Eligibility requirements include:

  • Annual income should be $67k or less
  • Must not have rental income
  • Must not have completed bankruptcy during the year
  • Must not have self-employment income from selling inventory
  • Other qualifications may apply depending on rare circumstances
