Mortuary Science Program Receives Full Reaccreditation
October 25, 2023
The college’s Mortuary Science associate degree program was recently granted reaccreditation by the Committee on Accreditation for the American Board of Funeral Service Education (ABFSE). The reaccreditation is for seven years – the maximum allowed by the board.
The ABFSE serves as the national academic accreditation agency for college and university programs in funeral service and mortuary science education. The Hudson Valley program last received full accreditation in 2016.
The Mortuary Science Department at Hudson Valley has been in existence for more than 50 years and is one of just four accredited programs in New York State. It annually serves approximately 50 students interested in entering the funeral service industry. The program educates students for work in funeral service and also prepares them for the national board examination, which is required to become a licensed funeral director.
Representatives of ABFSE visited campus in June, toured the mortuary science facilities and spoke with faculty, students and administrators at the Troy campus.
“We take great pride in the quality of our academic programs,” said President Roger Ramsammy. “This full reaccreditation for our mortuary science program is another example of how Hudson Valley Community College is meeting the highest standards of education in this field.”
