June 14, 2023
Hudson Valley Community College hosted an event Wednesday to preview plans for a new workforce training center, the Applied Technology Education Center (ATEC), on the college’s Troy campus. The event, held in the Cogan Hall Automotive Lab, highlighted the demand for the new, state-of-the-art $85 million, 130,000-square-foot facility, which will train graduates for in-demand careers in fields such as: building systems, automotive and transportation technology, renewable energy and semiconductor manufacturing.
Speakers included Hudson Valley Community College President Roger Ramsammy, Albany Business Review Market President and Publisher Walter Thorne, NAACP Troy, NY Branch President Renée Powell, and Callanan Industries, Inc. President Don Fane. College leaders, workforce, education, and community and business partners, elected officials, academic leaders and students were also in attendance.
The event included a ceremonial signing of the “Workforce of Tomorrow Pledge,” for local leaders, businesses and community groups to demonstrate their commitment to creating and maintaining a new pipeline from education to the workforce in skilled trades.
“ATEC will train the next generation of workers who will power the essential industries our economy relies on,” said Hudson Valley Community College President Dr. Roger Ramsammy. “Students training to become HVAC technicians, electricians, automotive techs, semiconductor manufacturing technicians, welders, contractors, just to name a few, will receive top-notch, cutting-edge instruction that keeps pace with the latest industry standards. When they graduate, they will be ready to step into open jobs our local employers desperately need to fill. At the same time, it will create opportunities for under-resourced communities to gain the training and skills they need to fill the industry gaps with well-paid, family sustaining careers.”
