College Introduces Microcredentials for Skill Building and a Pathway to a Degree
February 7, 2022
Hudson Valley Community College is joining other SUNY colleges and universities in offering a growing number of microcredentials for current and prospective students.
Microcredentials combine together a series of related courses to provide in-demand skills for students seeking to gain a competitive edge in the workplace, advance in their careers or find new employment. To date, the college has launched 19 microcredential programs ranging from Data Analytics to Medical Billing and Coding.
Across the SUNY system, nearly 400 microcredentials are being offered in more than 60 academic disciplines.
All microcredentials are also “stackable,” meaning they can provide a pathway to a certificate or degree at the college when taken sequentially. Students who successfully complete coursework in the college’s Introduction to Accounting microcredential, for example, can use those credits toward an A.A.S. degree in Accounting.
To enroll, new students should contact the Office of Continuing Education. Current students should speak with their academic advisor. Completed microcredentials will be noted on student transcripts.
“Employers are recognizing microcredentials as a way to verify that students have gained a specific set of skills. Because our microcredentials are offered at a SUNY community college, students know they are getting high quality instruction from faculty members who understand their subject area,” said President Roger Ramsammy. “Each microcredential has immediate value, and several of our offerings are ideal for adult students who may be looking to explore a different career path without committing to a full degree.”
