Food Assistance for Students Highlights Good News This Week

As classes continued online and remotely this week, the college continued to find new ways to assist its students and the greater Capital Region community in response to the COVID 19 outbreak.
Emergency Food Assistance for Students
The college has created a way for current students who are experiencing food insecurity to get some relief. Funded by the Student Senate, Faculty Student Association and donations to the college Foundation, many of which came from members of the college community, an emergency fund was created to purchase $50 gift cards to local grocery stores.
Students may request the $50 Hannaford gift cards by completing the Application for COVID-19 Food Pantry Support. Over the past 11 days 133 students have taken advantage of the gift cards.
Phi Theta Kappa Chapter Inducts New Members Virtually
Despite being apart, the college’s Alpha Xi Sigma chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, held its induction ceremony via Zoom meeting on Monday, April 20. More than 130 students were inducted into the international honor society, which is for high achieving students at two-year colleges.
Health Sciences Dean Promoted to Captain in Naval Reserve
Dean of Health Sciences Dr. Patricia Klimkewicz, who is serving in a temporary hospital set up in Manhattan’s Jacob Javits Center was promoted to captain in the Naval Reserves on April 1. A promotion ceremony to mark the honor took place on Times Square.
College Donates Dental Hygiene Supplies to Rensselaer County Effort
With more families in the region facing economic hardship, the college is helping with the new Rensselaer County Rise Up initiative. This week, the college’s Dental Hygiene Department donated supplies that can be distributed throughout Rensselaer County to those in need. At total of 432 tubes of toothpaste and 360 toothbrushes were donated.
Educational Opportunity Center’s Joe Forget Provides Soup for His Community
Capital District Educational Opportunity Center (EOC) Associate Professor Joe Forget might not be able to teach his students how to make a great cream of broccoli soup these days but he can still feed those who might need a hot meal in his Waterford community.
This week, the longtime Culinary Training instructor at the EOC posted on social media the fact that he’s making several types of soup and putting out in front of his Waterford home. He’s encouraging anyone who would like a hot bowl of soup to stop by and bring their own container.
WNYT’s Jacquie Slater plans to interview Joe and others in Waterford who are working together to help feed those in need.
