College to Host Race Away Stigma: 5K Race and Fun Walk on Saturday
October 16, 2015
WHO: Students, faculty and staff of Hudson Valley Community College, along with members of the public, will participate in Race Away Stigma, a 5K Race and Fun Walk, to make others aware of the stigma associated with mental illness.
WHAT: The new Wellness Center at Hudson Valley will be joined by Equinox, Ellis Medicine, National Alliance on Mental Illness and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention in sponsoring Race Away Stigma, now in its seventh year.
Event registration is available online. The event is free to Hudson Valley students; $17 for Hudson Mohawk Road Runners Club members; and $20 for non-members. Race day registration is $25.
WHEN: Saturday, Oct. 17, 2015
Registration begins at 8:30 a.m.
Race/walk begins at 10 a.m.
Award ceremony and post-race refreshments begin at 11 a.m.
WHERE: The race starts at the Student Pavilion in front of Hudson Hall. Post-race events also take place there.
DETAILS: One in five Americans experience a form of mental illness at some time in their lives, and college years are a common time for mental health issues to occur. Due to embarrassment and other issues, those affected can be reluctant to seek treatment or care. Removing the stigma attached to mental illness is one of the best ways to encourage recovery.
Race sponsors will provide information about mental illness and discuss resources available in the Capital Region.
