Girls in STEM Workshops
The 9th Annual Girls in STEM conference will be held on Saturday, March 26, 2022 for girls in grades four through eight.
Workshop #1
DNA, Molecules & Algae Oh My!
Students will get an inside look at DNA extraction, use microscopes and molecular models, and utilize equipment to see bioluminescent algae.
Presented by Jaya Dasgupta and Sujatha Kadaba, HVCC Biology, Chemistry and Physics Department
Workshop #2
A Mission to Mars and You’re in Charge!
Students will create a plan for looking for life on Mars. What things classify something as living? How do these look under a microscope and using satellite images? What will Martian rock samples look like?
Presented by Jamey Thompson, HVCC Biology, Chemistry and Physics Department
Workshop #3
Newspaper & Masking Tape Bridge: Design, Build and Test!
Students will design a bridge using simple materials and then build their design and test it for usability and strength!
Presented by Kevin Wynne, HVCC Biology, Chemistry and Physics Department
Workshop #4
Engineering 101: Toolbox Construction
Using materials provided by Curtis Lumber, students will build and decorate their very own toolbox!
Presented by Jennifer Nicols, HVCC Engineering, Architecture, Construction, Computer Science and Mathematics Department
Workshop #5
Build & Test: Spaghetti & Marshmallow Towers
Students will design a tower using simple materials and then build and test their design, aiming to be the tallest!
Presented by Linda Lim, HVCC Engineering, Architecture, Construction, Computer Science and Mathematics Department
Workshop #6
Fun with Electronics!
Students will wire a circuit to light up a light bulb!
Presented by Michael Cannistraci, HVCC Engineering, Architecture, Construction, Computer Science and Mathematics Department
Workshop #7
Science in Sport
Students will measure wing span and calculate vertical jump height to see how they measure up to their favorite athletes. Students will also test sensory receptors in the skin, reaction time and build catapult lever systems to understand levers used in sports.
Presented by Christine Jenkins, HVCC Biology, Chemistry and Physics Department
Workshop #8
Use of Chemistry in Forensic Investigation
Students will utilize chemicals and photographic evidence in order to help solve crimes.
Presented by Melissa France, NYS Police Forensic Chemist
Workshop #9
Construction 101: How to Use a Speed Square & other Cool Tools!
Students will gain an understanding of the speed square and other tools used in construction, then practice using these tools themselves.
Presented by Margie Miller, Retired Carpenter
Workshop #10
Architecture & More: Designing your Own Space
Students will utilize drawing and hands-on activities to design a space of their choosing!
Presented by Johanna Carabantes, HVCC Engineering, Architecture, Construction, Computer Science and Mathematics Department
Workshop #11
Cereal, Chocolate & Math!
Students will use cereal and chocolate to explore mathematics in hands-on activities.
Presented by Peter Stix, HVCC Engineering, Architecture, Construction, Computer Science and Mathematics Department
