This course offers valuable training in legal, ethical, and regulatory concepts central to this field, including HIPAA compliance, official coding guidelines, and third-party payer requirements.  You will also come to understand all phases of the revenue cycle—from patient registration through medical coding, claims submission, reimbursement, and collections. You will also learn common medical terminology to help you converse with others in healthcare easily and with confidence. You will study word parts and the structures and functions of the human body.  Also presented are the disorders and medical procedures common to each body system, including musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive, nervous, endocrine, integumentary, genitourinary, lymphatic, and immune.

NYS Real Estate 77 Hour Salesperson Licensing Course

In New York State, candidates must pass a 75-hour state-approved course to be allowed to sit for the New York Salesperson Licensing Exam. This course, offered in conjunction with The CE Shop, is an online interactive course that is comprehensive and up to date with current trends. The course is designed to help you pass your New York licensing exam and prepare you for a new career in real estate. The real estate industry is very dynamic. This course will give you insight on issues facing real estate agents in New York, including local government regulations and agency relationships. Every topic coved is inspired by real-life scenarios you’ll face as a salesperson. The state requires that your final course exam be proctored. You’ll need to schedule an appointment with an online proctor in advance.

Paralegal Certificate
This intensive, nationally-acclaimed program is designed for beginning and advanced legal workers. You will be trained to assist trial attorneys, interview witnesses, investigate complex fact patterns, research the law and assist in preparing cases for courtroom litigation. The instruction is practice-oriented and relates to those areas of the law in which legal assistants are in most demand.

The online paralegal course is split into two parts: Introduction to Paralegal Studies and Advanced Paralegal Concepts. All registered students will be enrolled in both sections, which will be completed consecutively. Introduction to Paralegal Studies provides the foundation for paralegal study. During the seven-week course, you will gain an understanding of the American legal system and learn how you can be of assistance in the exciting field of law. Coursework is equivalent to 45 class hours of study.

Advanced Paralegal Concepts takes over where the introduction leaves off. In this seven-week course, you will learn the advanced skills of legal research and writing, formal and informal advocacy, and appellate procedure. Coursework in the advanced course is equivalent to an additional 45 class hours of study. This is an accelerated course. While there are no prerequisites, you will be expected to complete a significant amount of homework and you can anticipate spending an average of 12 hours per week reading and completing writing assignments.

Successful graduates of this program will be awarded a certificate of completion. To receive the certificate, you must pass six quizzes and successfully complete five legal document writing assignments. 8.4 CEUs

Please note: paid access to the Westlaw online legal library is offered through the Center for Legal Studies and is strongly recommended to complete the second part of the course. Students have access to Westlaw at Hudson Valley Community College while on campus. Textbooks that accompany the instruction of this course are available for purchase in the college’s bookstore or through the Center for Legal Studies at (800) 522-7737.

Paralegal Certificate
Students will be trained to interview witnesses, investigate complex fact patterns, research the law, prepare legal documents, and assist in preparing cases for courtroom litigation. The instruction is practice-oriented and relates to those areas of law in which paralegals are in most demand. Live lecture students are required to attend at least 80 percent of class in order to receive a certificate.Lesson 1: “Legal Terminology, Documents, Ethics, and the Litigation Process”: This first session focuses on the history of American jurisprudence, the theory of law, the legal process, and the nature of litigation. Discussion will cover pre-trial, trial and post-trial procedures as well as in-depth coverage of legal ethics. At the end of the first session of class, students will know how to prepare a Complaint/Petition, Answer, Third Party Complaint/Petition, and Motion for Summary Judgment.Lesson 2: “Introduction to the Evidentiary Predicate”: This session covers the rules of evidence and civil procedure. Basic interviewing and investigation techniques and the development and use of demonstrative evidence will also be explained. At the end of the second session of class, students will prepare discovery matter such as Interrogatories, Request for Admissions and Request for Production of Documents.Lesson 3: “Identifying Relevant Authority”: During this session, students will learn how to identify relevant law, determine the differences between primary and secondary authority, and between mandatory and persuasive authority, and learn how to find and apply authority to hypothetical factual situations.Lesson 4: “Introduction to Legal Research”: Students will learn research techniques for use in legal memoranda, motions, and briefs. Primary and secondary source materials will be discussed, and a concise approach to legal research will be developed.Lesson 5: “Legal Research Practice”: Legal research skills will be applied this session with emphasis on shepardizing statutes and case law and learning to use computerized legal research terminals. Numerous research assignments will be given, discussed, and critiqued. The West Key Number System® will be learned thoroughly.Lesson 6: “Legal Writing and Appellate Procedure”: This final session will concentrate on the preparation and critique of legal memoranda, including an Interoffice Memorandum of Law and Appellate Brief. Principles of appellate procedure will also be reviewed. Proper citation format will be covered, along with a discussion of job hunting techniques and job leads for those seeking their first employment as paralegals.Prerequisites
There are no prerequisites to take the course, but students will be expected to complete a significant amount of homework for each session. This program will help students increase their office’s efficiency, productivity, and billable hours as well as learn new marketable job skills.

Veterinary Assistant

Do you love animals? Have you ever thought about a career as a veterinary assistant? This intensive course will provide the information you need to become a productive member of a veterinary team. The course is designed for people who want to work as veterinary assistants at veterinary hospitals and for those already employed in related positions.  The course covers all the requirements that hospitals and veterinarians’ offices look for, and more! You’ll learn about every aspect of veterinary assisting, including anatomy and physiology, animal restraint, laboratory sample collection, assisting in surgery and dentistry, prescription preparation, and taking radiographs.

You’ll also learn how to interact professionally with clients and gain the expertise you need to educate them about key topics in pet care, such as nutrition, vaccinations, and administering medication. The course concludes with a lesson to prepare you for the job market, in which you’ll see how to create an effective resume, advance your expertise, and develop strong interview skills. You will truly learn everything you need to know to be successful in your new career. This course is 225 hours and students will receive 22.5 CEUs upon completion of the course. All materials and books are included.
