On exhibit: Thursday, Sept. 14 – Saturday, Oct. 14, 2017

Utica artist Jonathan Kirk presents an exhibition of models and studies. Kirk’s sculptures, while abstract, are evocative of a wide range of sources, from the natural and organic world to forms of industrial and naval architecture. The works explore the intersection between the artist and the engineer, but still embody the mysterious nature of what might be called “cultural machinery” and demonstrate how the collective visual unconscious is plundered and sampled to create forms that are at once familiar yet new.

We Animals, founded in 1998 by award-winning photographer Jo-Anne McArthur, uses photography to demonstrate that the animals we use for food, clothing, research, work, entertainment and companionship are sentient beings. Just like us, animals are able to perceive and feel. We Animals aims to break down the barriers humans have built that allow us to treat non-human animals as objects or property. By documenting human interactions with animals, We Animals hopes the viewer finds new significance in these ordinary, often unnoticed situations of use and abuse. Today, We Animals is an internationally celebrated archive and more than 100 animal organizations have benefited from the project’s work and continue to collaborate with McArthur on stories, investigations, campaigns and humane education. McArthur’s appearance in the Capital Region is not just for avowed animal lovers, but for anyone who would like to learn about the many campaigns to end the animal suffering around the globe. McArthur’s first book, also titled “We Animals,” and others will be available for purchase at the event.

Drummer and composer William Hooker accompanies “Within Our Gates,” a 1920 silent film by director Oscar Micheaux that is the oldest known surviving film by an African-American filmmaker. The film portrays the hardships, duplicity and amazing reversals of fortune a black schoolteacher experiences on a journey north to raise funds for her school. Despite the director’s graphic depictions of racial injustice and violence, the film ultimately delivers an uplifting message of racial pride and self-respect. William Hooker started drum lessons at age 10 and says “I consider myself a ‘jazz musician.’ My work fits in the jazz tradition because it’s based on improvisation, it’s based on learning one’s craft.” On his more than 60 CDs, his compositions range from jazz to “new” and experimental music.

The Transfer Advisor Visit offers students who are more decisive about transferring to a particular college or university an opportunity to meet with representatives. Students will be able to meet individually with the transfer college representative, by appointment only.

Scheduled appointments are generally 15-30 minutes, and students receive specific advisement about admission criteria, general education requirements, course recommendations and transfer of credit. Students are advised to bring an unofficial copy of their Hudson Valley Community College transcript so that the four-year college representative can provide a transfer evaluation of courses taken. Students can access and print a copy of their transcript from Hudson Valley WIReD.

Appointments are required. For more information, or to schedule an appointment with a transfer college representative, contact the Center for Careers and Transfer at (518) 629-7326.
